Not sure how to choose a container

A Guide to Help You Choose a Container

GVCT are the experts in container rental and work with many first-time renters.  We’ll talk you through the process in plain English, answer all of your questions and give you a firm price and delivery date – all in a single Freephone call on 0800 917 8602.

Where do I start?

Our 5-STEP process makes selecting the right storage container a breeze;

  1. Choose the location
  2. Choose the container size
  3. Choose end/side opening
  4. Choose accessories (if needed)
  5. Contact us for pricing and delivery dates

What could be simpler?

1. Choose the location

We deliver and collect our containers using approved contractors with self-loading trucks. Whilst all our drivers really are highly experienced, they can’t do the impossible.  So you need to make sure that the place that you want the container to be located is on flat, hard ground, with enough space for the container AND the truck.  You also need to take care that there aren’t any low overhead cables or trees and, given that the truck & container are quite heavy, no underground cables/drains/manholes that might get damaged.

2. Choose the container size

There is a wide range of container sizes available (described by their length in feet), ranging from the very large 40 footer to the small 6 footer.  At 10ft and above containers are the same width (8ft) and height (8ft 6) regardless of length.  Choosing the size can be tricky unless you have a very specific idea of what you will use it for.  What we suggest is to equate a 20ft container to a typical domestic garage in your mind.  Would a domestic garage be big enough for what you need? Too big? Too small? If you need more height we can also supply ‘high cube containers’ which are 9ft 6 high with the same other dimensions. And if you still can’t decide, just give us a call and we’ll talk you through it.

3. Choose end/side opening

Most containers are built to be end opening, but we do have side access containers as well. However, we’d recommend that you use an end opener unless you have a very specific need for side opening as availability can be limited.  Of course, if you’re planning to use the container as a site office or other staff facility, then there is a broader range of specialised products.

4. Choose accessories (if needed)

By default containers come as an empty steel box with a simple wooden floor.  If you are planning to store easily stackable items (boxes) or large non-stackable items then this is ideal.  But to get optimum use of the storage space you might want racking/shelving, steps, ramps, lighting or other accessories.  We have a full range of accessories that we can fit/provide as part of the rental agreement.

5. Contact GVCT for pricing and delivery dates

We import thousands of containers into the UK each year from our parent company in China – which means that we have good availability across the full range of sizes and options.  The containers are stored at depots across the UK so that we can minimise delivery times and prices.
